USA Today reporting that Randy Shannon accepts the head coaching job at Miami late last night, ascending from defensive coordinator to become the sixth college football coach of color.
I applaud the hire on to counts - giving the job to an inside man, and also the courage to embrace diversity in the coaching staff in one of the most culturally diverse cities in America.
I shudder at the path to get here though - Miami sent overtures to so many coaches this has the feel of securing the seventh-best guy on the list. Greg Schiano, Lou Saban, and even Bernie Kosar all have been rumored to receive offers.
Rumors are surfacing overnight that Rich Rodriguez will grab the Alabama job today. More to come.
More on Shannon from around the routers:
Miami Herald - Let the sociologists debate the race issue, this "graduation" feels right.
Sun-Sentinel - one head coach involved in talks about the UM opening concluded: "It was Shannon's job to lose" once Schiano exited the picture.
